Welcome to Kindergarten

Hi Kindergarten Families!    I am so excited to meet all of you and begin this VERY exciting year of fun and learning! The first day of school is on Wednesday, August 15th. A few days prior to that, you will receive a letter in the mail with information about who your child’s teacher is, the room number, and an invitation to a “Meet your Teacher” event which will occur on the morning of Monday, August 13th in our classroom (Room 17). The specific time will be given to you in the letter as well.  Besides meeting the teacher, this is a great way to familiarize your child with the classroom, set up a bus schedule/going home routine, and most importantly, comfort any nerves that may be building up for the big first day! At this orientation, we will also give you an important newsletter that will answer the many questions you may have (ie: information about our daily schedule, snack time, where to pick your child up, etc.). If you've already started school shopping, we

Hi Kindergarten Families, Here is what’s going on in Kindergarten next week: Due to a very fun-filled busy week, we will not be having Centers all of next week, so we will not need any of you wonderful volunteers at Centers time. Monday is our fieldtrip to Natural Bridges. Don’t forget to send a booster car seat with your child to school that day. Wednesday is a school-wide spirit day: “Ugly Sweater Day”! We can’t wait to see all of the fun, festive winter/holiday clothing and flare that day! Friday is our “Pajamas and Pancakes Holiday Party” that our awesome Room Moms are organizing. We are encouraging the students to wear cozy pajamas to school this day (if they attend Apple, you might want to send an extra pair of regular clothes in their backpacks).   In addition to the party, we will also go to a school-wide holiday Sing-a-Long in the MPR. Language Arts: We will be reading a story about a snowman and focusing on all of the CVC words and Sight Words that we

Words of the Week: “play” and “with” Language Arts:  We’ve now studied each of the short vowel word families, so we’ll be reviewing them in our reading center along with reviewing all of our high frequency words.  Students will read a new book called “Zig Pig”. Writing: Students will write a sequential story (First, Next, Last) about how to catch a Gingerbread Man.  They will also observe the butterflies that recently emerged from their chrysalises and write about them. We a

Hi Kindergarten Families, Next week we will continue our book study of the different versions of The Gingerbread Man.  Students will play a fun math game using dice to “Roll a Gingerbread Man”.  They will also practice phonemic awareness with a Gingerbread Rhyming activity. Reading: We will be reading “Ken and Jen” and focusing on the “_ug” word family. Words of the Week: he/she Math: Students are practicing different ways to solve and explain their reasoning of different mathematical word problems through the use of ten frames, number lines, tally marks, subitizing and manipiulatives. They will also continue to focus on studying the geometry of solid shapes (sphere, cone, cube, cylinder, rectangular prism). Writer’s Workshop: We are beginning the process of writing “How To” stories in which students teach others how to do something through their writing.  This week we introduced the concept by reading about and brainstorming ways to be a good friend.  The students are

Hi Kindergarten Families,  Since we only have school on Monday and Tuesday next week, we’ll spend time reviewing prior concepts and continuing to observe and study our caterpillars who will likely begin to form their chrysalises any day now!    On Tuesday, we will have a small “feast” in honor of Thanksgiving.   We will give the students a small snack and focus on manners, friendship and the meaning of being “thankful” and “giving”.   With Thanksgiving on our mind, we’d like to thank all of you who have volunteered/donated to our class in many different ways this year. Without your support we would not be able to do so many exciting activities in our class. We are very thankful for each and every one of you and your wonderful children! When we return to school the following week, we will continue our butterfly unit by painting monarch butterflies and studying the symmetry of the patterns on their wings.   We will do more butterfly themed math and writing as well. The word of th

Hi Kindergarten Families, Next week is Parent/Teacher conference week. It is very important that you arrive on time for your conference due to our very packed schedule (each conference is only allotted 15 minutes).   Since Mrs. Werner’s class will be in our room during the afternoon, we will be meeting with you in our Academic Coordinator’s office, so when you arrive, please go to the main office and they will direct you to where we will be. If you are early, you can check out the Book Fair that is happening in the library next door, or you can visit it with your child after school any day next week. We have created a Wish List at the Book Fair in case anyone is interested in contributing to our classroom collection of books! Here is what's going on in Kindergarten next week: Word Wall Word: "you” and “is” Writer’s Workshop: Students have made amazing progress with sounding out words. We have been practicing clapping out the syllables of long words and soundin

Hi Kindergarten Families,    Thank you SO much to everyone who was able to volunteer/donate to our class Halloween party! And a special BIG thank you to our amazing Room Moms for planning and organizing everything! We are such lucky teachers to have so many supportive and involved families this year! The students all agreed that it was “the best day ever!”.    Here is what’s going on in Kindergarten next week:  New theme: Butterflies! We ordered some caterpillars for the students to observe in our classroom. In a couple of weeks, the caterpillars will begin to form chrysalises, at which point we will put them into a large netted cage so we can watch them emerge into butterflies! At the end of observing this amazing life cycle, we will release the butterflies outside. It’s a very exciting process- make sure to ask your child all about it throughout the next few weeks!   Word of the week: “for” Math focus: Students will continue to work on math word problems and solving the
